Tires and Rims

Tires go through a lot of things, and a clean car means having tidy tires and rims. They are usually covered with brake dust, grease, and dirt. So how can you clean them without using any specialized products? Simple! Try dish soap. Add a teaspoon of this basic household product into a gallon of warm water. Get a sponge and soak it into the soapy water. Wring the sponge out a bit and begin scrubbing the rims and tires. Don’t forget to prepare another bucket that is filled with clean water. You will use this second bucket to clean the sponge before you soak it again in the bucket that’s filled with soapy water to avoid redistributing the dirt. When the grime and grease are removed from all four tires of the car and you are satisfied with the way they look, you can rinse them using a handy garden hose or a bucket filled with warm water. Grab a soft towel to dry tires and rims. If you don’t have time to clean all four tires in a single go, you can always wash one tire at a time. If you have kids, you can ask them to help out. This will make the chore fairly easy. 

Sort and Toss

Get a garbage bag and two plastic bins or empty boxes. Begin in the car’s front area and then work your way to the back seats. Be sure to throw any garbage you see on the plastic bin. The next thing you need to do is to sort everything that you have collected. Everything that goes inside the house or the garage should be dropped in a single bin or bag. All other items that remain in the car should be placed in a separate bin. Don’t forget the floor mats. Take them out and shake off the dust or you can vacuum them. Always have a zip bag in your car as you can use it for all the trash inside the car. 

Seats and Mats

In case the upholstery or the mats are stained from coffee, fast food, or even puke, go grab vinegar. Mix one part white vinegar and one part hot water in a spray bottle and then spray it on the stained area and then scrub using a stiff brush. Repeat the process until you are satisfied with the end result. 

Cleaning the Interior

When cleaning, be sure to start at the top. This applies to car cleaning as well. Start tidying up the dashboard, steering wheel, and then the door handles using a microfiber cloth and equal parts of vinegar and water that’s mixed in a spray bottle. Clean the windows starting from the inside and then out. Don’t forget to include the side and rear view mirrors.

• You use dishwashing liquid – this is probably one of the most common mistakes that people make in regards to washing their car. There are multiple reasons why people use washing-up liquid. One is that they falsely believe that since it is doing wonders for the dishes, it must be good for the car. Another is that it is readily available and very easy to use. The trouble comes from the fact that the chemicals used to clean the dishes can, in fact, do some damage to the paintwork. What you should be doing is using a specialised car shampoo for best results in terms of removing grime and dirt, all the while keeping your paintwork intact.
• Using the wrong type of cloth – as far as cleaning the car is concerned, you shouldn’t reach for that sponge or dishcloth. These aren’t meant to be used on cars, nor do they do a decent job of cleaning the vehicle. They contribute to lasting imperfections, such as swirls and fine scratches. These may seem minor, but they quickly add up. What you need to use for best results is a wash mitt of microfibre material, which is great for absorbing moisture and cleaning the surface of the vehicle.
• Cleaning when the sun is at full force – it is never wise to clean your car out in the sun. Yes, you may feel like it, since the weather is all nice, but it is ineffective. As you apply shampoo or paint polish, it will dry very fast, even before you have had a chance to wipe it off. What you should do instead is park your car in the shade and clean it there.
• You apply any product directly on the paintwork – if you value your car, you should never ever apply products directly on the paintwork. A great deal of auto-detailing solutions should first be diluted and then used. Even then, it is best to apply products on a cloth and then on the car. This is particularly the case with polish and wax.
• Cleaning missed areas with a drying cloth – there is no guarantee you will clean every area of your car. Unfortunately, sometimes you only find this out when you are drying the car and instinctively tackle the missed spot with a drying cloth. This can work the dirt into the pain and cause scratches, so it is best not to do it.
• You clean with a single bucket only – as you dip your sponge/mitt into the bucket, the water in it will soon become dirty. If you use it more, you will only transfer the grime on the paintwork, which leads to nothing good. It is best to use at least two buckets or to change the water in the bucket regularly.
